No minimum fee for BMFA silent flight league comps 2023

SFTC has voted not to impose a minimum entry fee in 2023 for a competition’s results to be eligible for BMFA silent flight leagues.

Why?

The object of this change is to encourage more people to run and to enter League competitions by removing any price-barrier. Some organisers fund competitions other than through individual entry fees. Some organisers may be able to charge lower entry fees than the previous £10 minimum. Some organisers will still charge £10 or more.

It is not the object of this change to reduce the vital financial contribution which League competitions make to national expenditure on silent flight by the BMFA and the SFTC. We urge competition organisers to contribute a proportion of their fees to the SFTC: we suggest a minimum of £1 per competitor per competition; more if possible. This is voluntary (as it was under the old system, where the requirement on organisers was to charge £10, not to contribute any of it to the BMFA). But anyone entering BMFA League competitions has a stake in national expenditure. As well as enhancing national prestige, sending teams to World and European Championships benefits all of us by improving standards in domestic competitions. And SFTC/BMFA do spend on equipment for domestic competitions too. Contributions from silent flight competition organisers are ring-fenced: they are channelled through Greg Lewis, SFTC Treasurer, and will be spent solely on silent flight.
